In the Classroom
Overnight, I have turned our classroom into a castle. In that castle we will be learning about fairy tales such as Billy Goats Gruff, Little Red Ridding Hood, Hansel and Gretel, The Three Little Pigs and many others. Specifically, we will be learning about sequencing events in a story such as “Once upon a time” and “Happily ever after”. We will also be reflecting on the outcomes of fairy tales to see what really happens to the villain. We will also introduce the elements of fantasy and reality. Further, we will look at the roles of villains and heroes. I encourage parents and siblings to read their family favorite fairy tales at home. Get ready because soon your kindergarten child will be able to discuss the elements of the story with you. This month is a proud moment for parents as we as a class have graduated from picture journals to half writing and picture journals. The children have started sounding out words to describe their picture. We are even learning to write short sentences. Wow, we have learned so much this year! |
At Home
Each night continue with the home reading program. Books at your child's reading level will continue to be exchanged every Tuesday and Friday. I encourage parents to spend five to ten minutes reading these books each night. I have noticed significant progress in all students recognition of the relationship between oral language and written words over the past few months. A few times a week help your child practice their ABC packages. I encourage parents to play the package games' with your child to help with letter recognition This should not be laborious it should be fun. Feel free to involve older siblings in these games. Month End Celebration Day At the end of May we will have a Fairy Tale celebration. There are princess costumes for the girls and knight costumes for the boys. There will be different stations where parents will help the children with activities related to a story that we studied. Then the children will present a puppet show on a fairy tale that they made up and have been practicing all month. We will finish with a tea party in our costumes. |
